Sexual Perversity in Chicago, 18 to 22 October, Burton Theatre: Mamet doesn’t do unusual. This is normality sped up, with young people loathing each other, needing each other, fucking each other. The only really perverse aspect of this show is its understated quality, a too rare demonstration that student drama can excite, not simply depress. This isn’t perfect stuff, but it is tight. It also contains great sunglasses. Bernie (Michael Lesslie) and Dannie (Nick Bishop) are ordinary guys who like to talk about girls and sex. Sometimes they meet girls, and occasionally they have sex. It is a study of territoriality on the smallest of patches. Dannie’s affair with Deborah (Charlotte Cox) lends him a quiet authority that soon undercuts the brashness of his buddy’s bragging. A surprising world of human empathy is briefly uncovered, along with the superficiality and hypersensitivity of macho bravado. There are times in this production when Mamet’s notoriously rhythmical dialogue sings. Lesslie, in particular, has an ear for Mamet-speak: he coaxes his lines, but coaxes at pace, and wrenches you open with the simplest of words. Upon introduction, Deborah asks Bernie what compliments Dannie has paid her. “All the usual things,” comes the reply. This is not a production afraid to extrapolate complexity. Lesslie exploits Bernie’s language, aggressively deploying jargon and trivia in everyday conversation to assert authority over his pal. Director Sarah Branthwaite has emphasised human frailty and jealousy: friendship is clung to at the expense of friend, and mutual understanding is rare. Bernie and Joan (Charlie Covell) undermine their friends’ relationship, an affair finally reduced to a barrage of anatomical expletives. Things could have been pushed further: perhaps they will, by second week. The Bernie/Dannie relationship seems occasionally oversimplified. The early scenes offer no answer as to why Dannie tolerates his friend’s bravado; hanging onto Bernie’s every word while the latter holds forth about his latest conquest. In fairness, that episode is possibly the greatest depiction of kinky sex and pyromania ever written, but nonetheless there does not seem to be much shared history, or at least much mutuality in their friendship. This is a shame, as the studied development of the relationship later in the play is one of this production’s highlights. Deborah’s presence, whether physical or actual, provokes anxiety and suspicion in both men as they renegotiate their friendship. Their spiritual reunion in the closing scene, babe-spotting at the beach, presents male bonding at its embarrassing finest. Mamet has been criticised as a writer of men only, and the play does sometimes feel like a two-hander with women added on. Nevertheless both Cox and Covell are strong and find substance in possibly tricky material. In bed, Deborah and Dannie discover an intimacy that makes the later disintegration of their relationship bathetic and awful. It also provides an informative contrast to Joan and Bernie’s mutual incomprehension during the latter’s slack, violent attempt at a pick-up. This is undoubtedly a play that places the pithy one-liner above narrative complexity, but this company has squeezed Mamet for almost everything he has got. Productions like this show what the BT is capable of: not just freshers taking part in a first and wobbly theatrical outing, but also plays that move and enthuse, and remind us of why we go to the theatre.ARCHIVE: 1st week MT 2005

Even as the American labor movement has shrunk to a third of its once-robust size, public-employee unions in California have thrived and come to wield enormous political power. Unfortunately, these unions all too often have forgotten their root concerns for workers everywhere. Through their greed, they have burdened the state with an unwieldy cost structure that may actually hurt large numbers of working Californians. Three recent examples come to mind: The union representing Metropolitan Transportation Authority workers objected to plans to install cameras on buses because it wanted its members to be guaranteed the jobs, even though that could mean delays in installation. Evidently, public safety is less important than public-employee job security. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREThe top 10 theme park moments of 2019 The state engineers’ union opposed a plan for expediting construction of a car-pool lane on the northbound 405 Freeway that relied on private contractors. Under intense union pressure, the Legislature failed to approve the plan, and now the state could lose $130 million in federal highway dollars. In its last session, Democrats in the Legislature – strongly encouraged by the electrical workers’ union – doomed the governor’s solar-power energy bill. The legislation had the support of practically everyone as an environmentally friendly break to regular folks who wanted to go solar. But Democrats poisoned it with an amendment that would have required that all installation be done by workers paid union wages. For decades, public-employee unions prospered on the good will of the public. But these unions, with their lavish benefits that threaten the state’s future, no longer serve anyone but themselves. They gobble up tax dollars even as the quality of life in California gets worse, the infrastructure deteriorates and the burdens of the disadvantaged mount. It’s a shame that public-employee unions no longer seem to care about protecting workers or helping to build a healthy and stable economy that benefits everyone. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. With the ball we were outstanding.“They had chances, but we had chances too, it was this kind of game. Football is sometimes unpredictable.”We had a problem in the first half with our high pressing – they had one more player on our left side. It was between 25 to 35 minutes that we had problems.“In the second half we showed, better quality. After Liverpool’s result, it was important to reduce the gap back to five points.“We created problems, arrived in perfect positions, attacking their full backs, but we were not so clinical like we were against Watford.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say
Ohio State junior defensive end Nick Bosa (97) runs to tackle another member of Rutgers’ offensive team during the first half of the game on Sept. 8. Ohio State won 52-3. Credit: Amal Saeed | Assistant Photo EditorMany former Ohio State players will take the practice field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center for the final time Wednesday for their Pro Day: one of their last chances to participate in drills and talk to teams prior to the 2019 NFL Draft. However, according to reports, defensive end Nick Bosa will not participate in drills during Ohio State’s Pro Day. While at the NFL Combine, Bosa ran a 4.79 40-yard dash, third-best among defensive lineman. He also recorded 29 bench-press reps and 33.5-inch vertical. Bosa also had the third-fastest three-cone drill, completing it in 7.1 seconds. Expected by many to be one of the first few players taken in the draft, Bosa’s season was cut short due to an injury suffered against TCU on Sept. 15. Bosa decided to withdraw from Ohio State on Oct. 16, leaving with six tackles-for-loss and four sacks during the 2018 season. Bosa was one of 10 Ohio State players that participated in the NFL Combine, joining offensive linemen Michael Jordan and Isaiah Prince, running back Mike Weber, wide receivers Terry McLaurin, Parris Campbell and Johnnie Dixon, quarterback Dwayne Haskins, defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones and cornerback Kendall Sheffield. All are expected to participate in Ohio State’s pro day.At the NFL Combine, Haskins recorded the slowest 40-yard dash of any quarterback, recording a 5.04 time. He also recorded a 28.5-inch vertical. According to reports, Haskins will throw again for scouts on Wednesday after doing so at the combine. In the 40-yard dash, McLaurin, Dixon and Campbell each finished in the top-8 times recorded, with Campbell recording a 4.31 40, tied for the fastest of any wide receiver. Offensive linemen Demetrius Knox, Malcolm Pridgeon and Brady Taylor, along with linebacker Dante Booker and kicker Sean Nuernberger, were not invited to the combine, but will likely participate in Pro Day drills Wednesday. In 2018, all 32 NFL teams were represented at Ohio State’s Pro Day, including five general managers and five head coaches. The 2019 NFL Draft will begin on April 25 in Nashville and will conclude on April 27.
