NHL playoffs 2019: Hockey world reacts to Lightning’s shocking first-round exit

first_imgRemember when the Tampa Bay Lightning had a 3-0 lead after the first period of their first-round series with the Columbus Blue Jackets?Seems like a lifetime ago now. The Lightning fell 7-3 to the Blue Jackets in Game 4 on Tuesday, completing a shocking sweep for the Blue Jackets over the reigning Presidents’ Trophy winners. It was a thorough beatdown the likes of which no one could have predicted, but once it became apparent that it was happening, the hockey world took swiftly to social media to register their take on one of the biggest collapses in Stanley Cup playoff history.MORE: 3 takeaways from Blue Jackets stunning first-round sweep of LightningIt all started with the Lightning themselves, who posted a bizarre Tweet in the immediate aftermath of Game 4. We don’t have any words and we know you don’t want to hear them.We understand your anger, your frustration, your sadness. Everything you’re feeling – we get it.This isn’t the ending we imagined, and certainly not the one we wanted. Thank you for being there the entire way.— Tampa Bay Lightning (@TBLightning) April 17, 2019Of course, the Blue Jackets were the team that no one saw winning the series, so of course, they jumped at the opportunity for some lighthearted gloating. That’s a nice prediction you’ve got there. It’d be a shame if someone messed that up. pic.twitter.com/eSq2PdP7Gq— x-Columbus Blue Jackets (@BlueJacketsNHL) April 17, 2019The rest of the sports world came with a range of reactions to the Lightning’s crash, from the straightforward to the absurd. The Tampa Bay Lightning are the first team in NHL history to win the Presidents’ Trophy and then be swept out of the first round. pic.twitter.com/paCttMCyFQ— Sporting News (@sportingnews) April 17, 2019Single-Season Win Record Holders:2007 Patriots: Lost Super Bowl2015-16 Warriors: Lost NBA Finals1906 Cubs: Lost World Series2001 Mariners: Lost ALCS1995-96 Red Wings: Lost Conf. Not a single bettor thought it was worth even a penny.— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) April 17, 2019By the way, I love the whole “top seed picks their opponents” idea, but this is why it will never happen. Imagine if Lightning “pick” the Blue Jackets and then get swept. Argentine star confirms he will not renew his Leicester contract for the coming season

first_img1 Argentine midfielder Esteban Cambiasso has confirmed he will not be renewing his contract with Leicester this season. The 34-year-old former Inter Milan tactician moved to the King Power Stadium last summer and was hugely influential as Nigel Pearson’s side staged a miraculous recovery to avoid relegation to the Championship. But, after Pearson was sacked by the club despite their escape, Cambiasso took to Facebook to confirm he will not be extending his stay, amid reports that he could sign for West Ham instead.“I would like to announce that I have decided not to renew my contract with Leicester City,” he said.“I have taken this decision only 24 hours after receiving the proposal from Leicester because I want to give the club as much time as possible to find an alternative.“I would like to thanks all the fans who last season made me feel proud to be part of a club with an unforgettable spirit and energy.“And a very special thanks to all my team mates, staff and every people of the club, with whom I have lived one of the most important years of my career, crowned with the remaining EPL status.“Many thanks to everyone, keeping you all for ever in my heart. Leicester City Football Club.”New Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri admitted earlier this week of his plea to the midfielder to stay, but it appears those words have fallen on deaf ears.He played 29 times in all competitions last season, scoring five goals.
