iOS makes gains thanks to Verizon iPhone according to Mobile Mix report

first_imgApple is reaping the benefits of having the iPhone available on two different U.S. carriers. According to Millennial Media’s Mobile Mix report for March, the Verizon iPhone helped iOS achieve an 11% increase in market share for smartphone operating systems. The increase gives iOS 31% market share while the Android OS continues to dominate with 48%. March marked the fourth month in a row that Android has been the leading smartphone OS. Helping Android to achieve this milestone is the fact that 14 of the top 20 smartphone devices currently run the operating system.Speaking of smartphone devices, Research In Motion (RIM) had some gains in March showing there is still a demand for BlackBerry handhelds. The BlackBerry Curve moved back into the #2 spot in the list of the top 20 smartphones while demand for the BlackBerry Torch grew 23% month-over-month. RIM may also soon contribute to the growth in a category Millennial Media calls “connected devices” as it launches its much anticipated PlayBook since the category includes tablet computers.  Adoption of the iPad 2 will assist with that growth as well.AdChoices广告New tablet devices overall helped push the category of connected devices up 21% month-over-month to put the category’s overall market share at 17%. This is in comparison to feature phones which make up 19% market share and smartphones which dominate at 64%. In addition to hardware, there was growth reflected in applications which may show that the economy is beginning to make a turn. That’s because the most significant month-over-month growth came from shopping and retail apps which experienced a 40% increase.Rounding out the report was a list of the top 15 manufacturers across all devices. Leading the pack was Apple at 32% followed by Samsung, HTC, RIM and Motorola. Apple’s lead is considerable since RIM is the next closest manufacturer with a 15.22% share. Clearly, iPad and iPhone sales across both AT&T and Verizon Wireless are helping Apple retain its crown among manufacturers.Read more at Millennial Medialast_img read more
