The contest was the Bulldogs’ lone exhibition and featured the Knapp Center debut of three new Bulldogs along with the veteran core. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by sophomore forward Liam Robbins (Davenport, Iowa), who walked away with 22 points and also led on the defensive end with five blocks in his appearance as the team’s go-to big man. Junior guard Roman Penn (Calumet City, Ind.) made a strong showing in his first game with Drake, leading the team at the point guard position. He finished behind Robbins in scoring with 15 points, padded with a steal and four rebounds.Filling a more prominent role, senior Anthony Murphy (Merrillville, Ind.) was the standout finishing with a double-double with 14 points, 18 rebounds and five assists. Multiple drives by Murphy later in the second half helped the Bulldogs maintain momentum and pull away from the Peacocks. Murphy also saw the most playing time with nearly 38 minutes on the court.”We’ve got a lot of things to do and things to clean up this week,” said Drake head coach Darian DeVries. “I’m excited about this group and I think we did some good things tonight, especially offensively. I thought we really moved it when we got out in transition.”The Peacocks were led by Jareese Williams, a redshirt junior at guard, with 23 points. Freshman guard Jake Hilmer led the team in assists with six, while fellow guard Travis Goede led with 10 rebounds. “Exhibition games are teachable moments and we certainly have plenty of teachable moments to go into this week with,” DeVries said. “Defensively, we were disappointing. Who we were today is not who we are from a defensive philosophy.”In a quick first half, the Bulldogs controlled the lead, only giving it up once early on when the Peacocks took over at 17-16. Drake responded with a 15-point run to reclaim that lead at 31-19. Robbins led in the paint early, scoring seven points down low and collecting four of his five blocks. The Bulldogs would hold the lead until halftime, although the Peacocks would close the gap and finish the half just behind at 46-41.The second half saw a reverse with the Bulldogs giving up the lead at 64-60 nearly seven minutes into the half. This span marked the beginning of a back-and-forth that saw both teams keeping within a possession of each other until about four minutes were left in the half. Murphy kept the ball in the Bulldogs’ hands with seven defensive rebounds to reclaim control of the game as Drake eventually pulled away.”That was really good for us to get that exposed now and clean that up this week,” DeVries said. “We will have a sense of urgency going into this week because there are no more freebies.”The Bulldogs open up the regular season at home against Kennesaw State on Nov. 7, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.Print Friendly Version Full Schedule Roster center_img Watch Live Preview Buy Tickets Live Stats ESPN 1350 ESPN+ Box Score (PDF) last_img
